At the Olympic Games in Paris on Wednesday, three Americans took home gold medals, two of them in an unusual way.
With a spectacular push around the last turn, Quincy Hall won the men’s 400-meter dash, clocking in at 43.40 seconds. After India’s Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for failing to make weight, Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman lost to Sarah Hildebrandt in the women’s 50-kilogram freestyle wrestling final.
Phogat declared her retirement after missing the cut by roughly 3 1/2 ounces.
After defeating New Zealand in the pursuit event, Jennifer Valente, Lily Williams, Chloe Dygert, and Kristen Faulkner gave the United States women’s cycling team its first Olympic gold.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Kenneth Rooks unexpectedly won the silver medal after holding off Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya. In the women’s pole vault, Katie Moon achieved a silver medal with a height clearance of 4.85.
The men’s water polo team and women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals, while the men’s volleyball team’s dreams of winning a gold medal were dashed in a semifinal loss to Poland. The latter team will play Italy on Friday with the goal of winning bronze.
